So much to learn from good music videos

“The official video for a-ha “Take On Me”. At the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards, the video for “Take on Me” won six awards—Best New Artist in a Video, Best Concept Video, Most Experimental Video, Best Direction, Best Special Effects, and Viewer’s Choice—and was nominated for two others, Best Group Video and Video of the Year. It was also nominated for Favorite Pop/Rock Video at the 13th American Music Awards in 1986.”

Winning 6 awards in 1986 got to mean a lot of things. The story within the video is good. Depicts a lady having a meal at a restaurant and caught the attention of the guy within the comic strip. She was then transported into a different world and the guy within the comic helped her escape. After her return to reality, she brought the comic back home to finish the story and hopes to reunite with the guy which she did.

Reasons I think it deserves the award and mention.

1. Implement of fast cuts for the fast paced song.

2. Good use of music pacing structures to break reality vs comic strip. see timestamp at 0.36, 1.16, 1.56, etc

3. Cuts to the beats of the song.

4. 3 mini storylines within the song.

5. Good use of color and effects to differentiate the reality vs comic strip.

6. Fresh Concept.

7. Different camera angles and camera movements to tell the story.

8. And of course, a good song.

Take On Me – Lyrics

We’re talking away
I don’t know what I’m to say, I’ll say it anyway
Today’s another day to find you shying away
I’ll be coming for your love, okay?

Take on me
(Take on me)
Take me on
(Take on me)
I’ll be gone
In a day or two

So needless to say, I’m odds and ends
But I’ll be stumbling away
Slowly learning that life is okay
Say after me, it’s no better to be safe than sorry

Take on me
(Take on me)
Take me on
(Take on me)
I’ll be gone
In a day or two

Oh, the things that you say
Is it life or just to play my worries away?
You’re all the things I’ve got to remember
You’re shying away, I’ll be coming for you anyway

Take on me
(Take on me)
Take me on
(Take on me)
I’ll be gone
In a day
(Take on me, take on me)
(Take me on, take on me)

I’ll be gone
(Take on me)
In a day
(Take me on)
Take on me
(Take on me)
Take on me
(Take me on)
Take on me

In that same award ceremony, the Video award of the year was given to

I wonder why… maybe it is the music, or the use of minecraft like figures in the video… probably not my cup of tea. (:
